About
plus
The City Kinos Munich consist of the Atelier and City cinemas, which are connected by a common courtyard including a bar. Housed in a former Volkstheater and former film palace, the cinemas now offer state-of-the-art comfort in comfortable seats and a varied film program. Regular premiere events and previews are part of the repertoire, as are original versions, Sunday matinees and late-night screenings.
History
plus
The City/Atelier-Filmtheater, today with 5 halls and a total of 837 seats, is not only the largest house, no it is also the oldest cinema of the City Group.Inaugurated in December 1959 by Walter Jonigkeit and Manfred Bertuch in the heart of the city as CITY FILMPALAST IM SONNENHOF, it was the first address for great and emotional post-war cinema as a single house with 1080 seats. Not to mention countless film premieres with subsequent celebrations.Between Sonnenstrasse and Schwanthaler Strasse, in the so-called Sonnenhof, the Munich Volkstheater opened its doors at the end of the 1950s. It is the building that today houses the ATELIER cinema. Theater was performed here for almost 15 years. In 1972, this theater space was closed and converted into a cinema with a rather unusual rear image projection. On 26.10.1972 the time had finally come and Munich's cinema landscape had become richer by one cinema. In the new ATELIER, 333 visitors could now enjoy countless hours of cinema. In the 1970s, the time for huge movie theaters seemed to be over and the one CITY FILMPALAST was turned into two new, separate movie theaters with 400 and 221 seats. At the same time, the original foyer was converted in 1978/79 and a third cinema hall with 103 seats was built. Since then, CITY 1-3 has enriched the Munich cinema landscape with a sophisticated arthouse program.Regular premiere events and previews are as much part of the repertoire as Sunday matinees and late screenings.
